Mello heard some rumors at dinner about him poisoning Near, and snapped at anyone who brought it up that it wasn’t true. Mello wouldn’t be so cowardly as to kill of a competitor instead of winning fairly. /Who started these…?/ He wondered. /Near wouldn’t have…right?/ Deciding he needed to go ask the boy, he headed back to Near’s room when he was done eating.

Near eventually fell asleep after eating, still curled up in the bed. He’d felt that his bladder was moderately full after eating, but he didn’t want to get up, so he just dozed off.

Mello walked down the hall and knocked on Near’s door again. No answer. Just like before, he poked his head inside. Near was still in bed, and he appeared to be sleeping. /He wouldn’t have spread the rumors…/ Mello thought /Not if he isn’t even getting out of bed./ Mello stepped inside, just to be sure, and sure enough, the albino was fast asleep. Quietly, retreating, Mello left the room and shut the door softly.

Near shifted a bit, but stayed asleep while Mello came in. The illness made him tired. He slept until the early hours of the morning.

At breakfast the next morning, Mello looked for Near at the table, but didn’t see him. /He must still be sick./ He figured, deciding to bring him some food. He knew that a staff member probably got him something already…but suppose they forgot?

Near stayed in bed the next morning, still feeling sick and tired. He sat up slightly to read, but other than that, he didn’t get up.

Mello snuck into the kitchen after breakfast and opened up the cabinet where they kept the lunch trays. He put some toast into the toaster and poured a glass of orange juice while he was waiting for it to be done. /Near never eats much./ He thought, putting the toast on the plate. /Wouldn’t want to waste time making too much for him, especially when he’s sick./

Near read quietly, studying the day’s lessons and being fairly certain he understood them. It took him awhile, though, since he had to stop reading when he got too nauseous.

Mello took the tray up to Near’s room, kicking the door with his foot several times to let Near know he was here. He was already late to his first class but whatever…the teacher might let it slide since he was usually on time.

Near sighed a bit and got up, feeling a bit lightheaded when he stood. He sat back on the bed. “Come in.” He said quietly, shutting his eyes.

Mello set the tray down for a minute and opened the door before picking it up again. “Don’t get up, silly.” He told Near. “That’s the point of breakfast in bed. You’re supposed to /stay/ in bed.” Mello set the tray down on Near’s desk and lifted one corner of Near’s bed so he could get in.

Near got back into bed. “I can’t eat anything. I’ll throw up.” He mumbled, looking at the food Mello brought.
