Mello knocked again, louder this time. When nobody answered he opened the door anyways, poking his head inside and seeing Near lying in bed. He really was sick.

Near heard the door open and he sighed, opening his eyes and looking at Mello. “What?” He mumbled quietly, staying curled up with the stuffed sheep.

“I…heard you weren’t feeling well.” Mello said, realizing how foolish he looked. “And, um. If I’m going to beat you, it’s going to be fair and square. So I won’t let you be disadvantaged by this illness.” Mello noticed Near had the sheep with him and smiled a little.

“Okay.” Near answered, not having much more to say. He sat up, his hair sticking out oddly as he looked at Mello. “I can still do the schoolwork…I’m not that sick.” He wasn’t going to get behind in class. Near held the sheep in his lap as he spoke, before taking another sip of water.

“…Alright. But I’ll bring any homework assignments to you. You need to stay in bed.” Mello ordered. He noticed the water on Near’s nightstand and for some reason felt mildly annoyed that it looked like someone else was already taking care of Near.

“Someone else already said that they would.” Near replied calmly. He didn’t like being waited on, but he felt too sick to do much himself, so he was grateful for it.

“Tell them thy shouldn’t bother. We have most of the same classes anyways.” Mello responded. Mello glanced at the clock on Near’s wall. “I have to go to dinner. I can bring you something when I get back.”

“I’m not hungry.” Near replied, lying back down and hugging the sheep to his chest. He honestly felt like he’d throw up if he ate anything.

“Alright then. I suppose that’s less work for me.” He turned to leave, suddenly realizing that he wouldn’t be seeing Near until the morning. “Um, goodnight.” He mumbled, shutting the door and leaving to go back to the library.

“Goodnight.” He responded quietly, wondering why Mello was being so nice to him. He didn’t exactly have a reason to.

Mello went down to dinner and sat at a table with Matt. Matt tried asking about his day with L, but Mello said he tell him later. It wasn’t something he wanted to discuss where other students could hear.

A few students had already heard that Near was ill, and rumors had started that he’d been poisoned while out with Mello. There were variations of the story where Mello had poisoned him, and some where L had done so. One of the staff members brought a bowl of soup to Near’s room, and Near reluctantly ate it, regretting doing so when he started feeling incredibly nauseous.
